SPRING WORKSHOPS

All workshops can be taken for credit towards one of our PROGRAMS (Certificate or Diploma).

Map as Biography (DRWGw238)

Artists drew the first maps. Explorers would return from their travels and describe the places they have been and artists would create maps based on these descriptions. In the 21st century more and more artists are turning to maps for a source for their art practice. In this workshop students explore the idea of mind-mapping as well as other sorts of 'mapping' to create expressive abstract drawings. One of the best ways to make good art is to focus on what is unique about you as an individual and make that part of your work. This workshop includes elements of this self-discovery process as well as some very exciting design and composition revelations. Workshop activities include working with drawing materials, watercolour paints and collage elements. All materials are provided for in the material fee. No previous drawing or watercolor experience necessary.

Abstract Pencil Drawing (DRWGw149)

Using the very simple and basic pencil as a starting point, this workshop covers all the different ways to make lines and tones. Students will use a range of graphite pencils as well as an eraser to create different effects. Exercises include a variety of approaches including doodling, Paul Klee's 'taking a line for a walk,' and Arschille Gorky's 'automatic drawing.' Students will also create dynamic abstract compositions by tracing their own marks, as well as using photographs as a source. Once you take this workshop, you will never stop drawing again! Or, if you have never drawn before, you will soon realize it’s a simple as signing your name. No previous drawing experience necessary.

Surrealist Video Workshop (PHOTw212)

Surrealism is a 20th-century literary and artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious mind and capture dream states. It utilizes fantastic imagery and the juxtaposition of unusual subject matter. In this workshop, students will make their own surrealist video, learning to film and edit a short work using cameras, lights and effects programs. This fun and creative workshop is a chance to explore and let your imagination run free. Saturday includes an introduction to Surrealist video, and overview of cameras and equipment, discussion of story structure and shooting of the individual works. On Sunday there is an introduction to effects and the editing of projects. There will be an in-class screening of completed projects at the end of the workshop. This workshop includes creative instruction by Catlin Lewis and technical assistance by Kirk Schwartz. No previous experience necessary.

Architecture as Abstraction (DRWGw240)

The focus of this workshop is on using architecture as a source for the development of subject matter and dynamic compositions . Starting with methods from the Russian Constructivists and their geometric drawings, students will make an abstract drawing based on a few simple parameters. In the second project, images of room interiors are traced and these components are developed into an abstracted composition, rendered in watercolor. No previous drawing or watercolor experience necessary.

Gouache Painting Workshop (PNTGw138-6)

Gouache (pronounced “gwash”) is an expressive, opaque water-based paint favoured by 20th century artists such as Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and Francis Bacon. Similar to watercolour, it contains an inert white pigment. The result is paint with a smooth, matte finish that is almost velvety in appearance. Gouache is popular today with many contemporary artists such as Olaf Hajek, Anish Kapoor and Maira Kalman, who appreciate gouache for its lush, saturated colours, and ease of use. It is compatible with other water-based media such as acrylic, watercolour, ink, and markers; as well as the dry media of pastels and coloured pencil. In many ways gouache embodies the finer qualities of watercolour, oils and acrylics while avoiding many of their limitations. Participants will work through a series of imaginative assignments exploring the creative possibilities of painting with gouache. No previous drawing or painting experience necessary.

The Contemporary Botanical (DRWGw239)

This workshop focuses on the relationship of nature and science in terms of depiction of imagery while at the same time opening up a very imaginative process for all participants. In the tradition of botanical drawings from the Renaissance period, students create their own fantastical compositions using collage. This collage provides source material for watercolour and drawing projects. No previous drawing or watercolor experience necessary.
