d62b5f2c-38f8-4fbd-a6cd-7733fb4f3fe2 Vancouver Island School of Art 302-733 Johnson St, Victoria, BC V8W 3C7 250-380-3500 info@vancouverislandschoolart.com Supply List - Oil Basics Drawing Supplies: HB pencil 1-2 sticks of willow (‘vine’) charcoal A small-medium sketchbook (eg. 5”x7”, or 9”x12”), or three similar-sized sheets of watercolour paper Brushes (‘Hog bristle’ (pale, dense, rounded bristles) are recommended but not required) One # 12 “filbert” brush (flat will also work) One # 8 “bright” brush One small pointed round brush (a size 2, 3 or 4 should be fine) for small details * You may bring brushes you already have instead (ie. one large, medium, and small) Other: A printed photographic source (it is recommended that this is printed rather than just on a phone.) Old photos or polaroids work well too. Painting Medium Refined linseed oil OR Gamblin Solvent-free fluid Painting Surfaces 2 small or medium surfaces such as primed canvas or board (eg. 8”x10”, or 12”x16”) Oil Paint A starter set of paints such as: https://opusartsupplies.com/products/winsor-newton-winton-oil-colour-set-of-10-x-12ml OR, for individual paint tubes purchase ONE of each of the following categories in small (25 or 35 ml tubes); ‘Student grade’ is fine (eg. Winsor and Newton Winton): A pale, intense yellow (eg. ‘Lemon’ or ‘citron’ Yellow (PY3) or Cadmium Yellow Light Hue) A warm blue (eg. French Ultramarine) A cool blue (eg. Pthalo (any version) or Cyan blue) A warm red (eg. Cadmium Red Light Hue, Vermillion, or Pyrrole Red Light Hue) A cool red (eg. Quinacridone Crimson or Rose, Permanent Alizarin Crimson) A white* (eg. Titanium White, or Flake White Hue) * NOTE: Oil painters will typically use more white than any other colour. You may wish to consider purchasing an extra tube or a larger size of white. Lukas is a reasonable brand with nice vivid colours suitable to this course's approaches - A range of warm and cool primary colours. Reds: Alizarin Crimson (cool), Cadmium red hue (Warm) Yellows: Cadmium light hue (W), Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow (C) Blues: Cerulean (C) & Ultramarine (W) Raw Sienna and Payne's Grey Acrylic medium -Any brand, used for base coats Brushes - Use a variety of rounds and flat synthetic sable brushes for watercolour/gouache - Have a large (#10 or #12 ) flat watercolour /gouache brush, #8 rigger, and Princeton 'Dagger" brush - Flat 1” acrylic brush to apply acrylic medium - Feel free to use what you already have Pens - Black water-soluble felt-tipped pen - Sharpie (fat) - Fudenosuke pen - Black broad posca marker Surfaces/Paper - Look for an 11"x14" or 16"x20" multi-media pad that takes watercolour and ink - Plan to repurpose old sketchbooks Palette - Plastic palette for mixing paint, (white plastic lids, white plates or disposable palette pad can also be used) Other Supplies - Drawing board (18x24”) - 2 Bulldog clips (to hold the paper to the board - optional). - Plastic containers to hold water (such as yogurt containers) - Painters masking tape (removable) - Rags (old cotton clothes) for cleaning up - Small spray bottle (Optional) Inks - Black ink specifically for fountain pens such as Parker Quink. Higgins also has a reasonable one - Three colours of Acrylic Ink (not for Fountain pens-it will clog them!) - F&W Liquitex and Golden all make good ones. Red.
