- Eric Metcalfe | Vancouver Island School of Art
Discover Eric Metcalfe's background and education. Vancouverite Eric Metcalfe has embodied the avant-garde "tradition" in Canadian art since at least the late 1960s. Born in 1940, he has worked as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, performance artist, illustrator and filmmaker, sometimes working under the name Dr. Brute. In 1973, he co-founded, in Vancouver, the pioneering artist-run centre Western Front. Over the years, he has drawn on a wide variety of influences, from jazz and comic books to conceptual and found art and movies. Metcalfe is a winner of the Governor General's Visual & Media Arts Award (2008). In 2010 he received a commission from the 'Cultural Olympiad' to create visual sculptures in collaboration with the renowned George Lewis musical score for 'ikons'. Metcalfe recently received (August 2015) an honorary doctorate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Discover Mohsen Veysi's background and education. Biography Mohsen Veysi is an artist, researcher, and educator with over 10 years of teaching experience. He has a BFA and MA in Visual Arts from the Academia di Belle Arti of Florence, an MFA from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a PhD in Humanities with a focus on art history from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has a passion for poetry, philosophy, and art history, which is evident in his work that integrates visual and verbal elements. His research explores various facets of art history, with a particular focus on the intersections of drawing, Persian calligraphy, and poetry, as well as the symbiotic relationship between image and text. As an instructor, Veysi engages students from diverse backgrounds, employing a student-centered approach that prioritizes self-discovery. Biography Renée graduated with honours from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver and received her MFA from Concordia University in Montreal. She has exhibited extensively throughout Canada as well as in the U.S., France and Mexico. Her work can be found work in both public and corporate collections and she has received numerous grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Quebec. Renée has over 30 years experience teaching painting and spent over 20 years as the Curator /Director of Exhibitions of the McClure Gallery in Montreal. Renee’s own paintings reflect her profound interest in the language of painting and perceptions of the natural world. We will look at work of other artists and discuss the process of source material gathering, research, development of an idea and fulfilment of a goal. - 12 related images: developed prints/digital print-outs/magazine images/posters/etc. Your images should hold some personal importance, although how they are related is up to you. - 9 x12” or larger sketchbook (preferably the kind with rings so pages can lie flat) - pencil (HB), eraser Additional items to be discussed during the first class: Bring the usual materials you use to paint with (Items listed below are just suggestions) - paints (oil, acrylics, watercolour or gouache) in a range of colours (including warm and cool yellow, warm and cool red, warm and cool blue, one green, one orange, one violet, one black and large tube of white (for oil or acrylic) - matte medium (acrylic) / odourless mineral spirits and walnut or linseed oil (oil) - variety of brushes suited to your choice of paint - surfaces to paint on (canvas, panel or paper, depending on paint choice).
