Discover Eric Metcalfe's background and education. Vancouverite Eric Metcalfe has embodied the avant-garde "tradition" in Canadian art since at least the late 1960s. Born in 1940, he has worked as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, performance artist, illustrator and filmmaker, sometimes working under the name Dr. Brute. In 1973, he co-founded, in Vancouver, the pioneering artist-run centre Western Front. Over the years, he has drawn on a wide variety of influences, from jazz and comic books to conceptual and found art and movies. Metcalfe is a winner of the Governor General's Visual & Media Arts Award (2008). In 2010 he received a commission from the 'Cultural Olympiad' to create visual sculptures in collaboration with the renowned George Lewis musical score for 'ikons'. Metcalfe recently received (August 2015) an honorary doctorate from Emily Carr University of Art + Design. He has a BFA and MA in Visual Arts from the Academia di Belle Arti of Florence, an MFA from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a PhD in Humanities with a focus on art history from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. He has a passion for poetry, philosophy, and art history, which is evident in his work that integrates visual and verbal elements. His research explores various facets of art history, with a particular focus on the intersections of drawing, Persian calligraphy, and poetry, as well as the symbiotic relationship between image and text. As an instructor, Veysi engages students from diverse backgrounds, employing a student-centered approach that prioritizes self-discovery.
