I recommend sable-hair or synthetic for acrylic paint, and hog-hair and sable-hair for oils) Substrate: At least 3 sheets of heavy weight paint paper for acrylic or oil paint (you may also use heavy weight mixed media paper suitable for wet mediums). Best is to go to Chinatown and find brushes. - Pens: Dip pens - pen holder and speedball C-5, C-6, and Hunt School Nib. Kuretake Bimoji brush pen. Fudenosuke brush pen - Paper: Look for an 11"x14" or 16" x 20" multi-media pad that takes watercolour and ink. If possible, Washi-like paper. Yasutomo Japanese Sketch paper pad 12 x 18, 9 x 12 is ok. Dollar stores can have surprisingly good sketchbooks with rice-like paper - Paint: Watercolours in tubes (gouache or acrylic gouache is also an option and can be used with watercolour) Turner and Holbein are my choices for colour quality. Lukas is a reasonable brand.
