Supply List - Painting from Photographs

  • Paint (acrylic or oil, heavy-body recommended) of various colours

    • Required:

      • Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow (Medium) (alternative: Hansa Yellow - Medium), Dioxazine Violet, Cadmium Red (Medium) (alternative: Naphthol Red - Light), Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green

    • Optional:

      • Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna

  • Brushes (of various sizes and shapes. I recommend sable-hair or synthetic for acrylic paint, and hog-hair and sable-hair for oils)

  • Substrate: At least 3 sheets of heavy weight paint paper for acrylic or oil paint (you may also use heavy weight mixed media paper suitable for wet mediums). This should be no smaller than 12 x 16 inches

  • Rulers (can be provided by VISA)

  • Paint mediums/solvents (optional)

  • Palette knifes for mixing paint (optional)

  • HB or 2H pencil

  • White conte stick or pencil crayon

  • Notebook/sketchbook

  • A printed photograph that uses camera flash for reference. You can use someone else's photo that you have sourced, or take your own. I recommend using a black and white image that has a high contrast of values, with intense/defined shadows and highlights caused by the camera flash. This printed image will be drawn on, so you may wish to bring a photograph that you do not cherish or a printed copy of one that you are willing to mark up.
