Supply List - Painting from Photography

 

Required materials for the first class:

- Acrylic or oil paints (black and white)

- Brushes of various sizes and shapes

- 8 x 8 inch stretched gessoed canvas or cradled wood board (slim, 3/4 inch) (these specific dimensions are required due to the parameters of the first in-class exercise)

- Mediums/solvents

- Pencil (2H recommended) and white chalk/conte stick

- Eraser


Additional materials to be discussed during the first class:

- Heavy-body acrylic paints (at least 60ml tubes of each colour)

  • Required colours:

    • Yellow: Cadmium Medium Yellow or Hansa Yellow (Medium or Light)

    • Red/Crimson: Napthol Red/Crimson or Cadmium Red Medium

    • Blue: Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue

    • Purple/Violet: Dioxazine Purple/Violet

    • Green: Phthalocyanine (Phthalo) Green

    • Orange: Cadmium Orange

    • White: Titanium White

    • Black: Mars Black or Lamp Black

  • Additional colours (optional): Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson

  • Recommended sets:

    • Liquitex Professional Heavy Body Acrylics set of 6: Naphthol Crimson, Hansa Light Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalocyanine (Phthalo) Green, Mars Black, Titanium White

OR

  • Opus Essential Heavy Body Acrylic set of 6: Naphthol Red Light, Hansa Yellow Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green Light, Lamp Black, Titanium White

- Acrylic medium (to extend working time of paints) (optional)

- Palette knifes for mixing and applying paint (at least two; one large knife with a rounded end, and one smaller knife that is narrow with a finer point)

- Paint brushes set of varied sizes/types (synthetic and/or sable hair for acrylic)(many art stores have pre-assembled starter packs of brushes, these are a good base. Invest in good quality brushes, they will perform better and last longer)

- Gesso or acrylic primer (if you wish to add another layer to your canvas) (optional)

- 2” wide paint brush

- Newsprint paper pad/cartridge paper pad

- Sketchbook/painting paper pads (for weekly homework assignments).

- Paper suitable for acrylic paint and wet mediums, roughly 11 x 17 inches

- Notebook

- HB or 2B pencil

- Erasers, kneaded and white/black (Sumo brand recommended)

- White conte stick/chalk/water-soluble pencil crayon (optional)

- Paint apron or clothes you are willing to get paint on (recommended)

- Plastic Toolbox or small Luggage case for material storage & transport (optional)


Additional items dependent on students’ personal preference/chosen direction for assignments:

- Alternative paints and their supplies:

  • Oil : select colours, brushes (hog bristle), substrates, rags, odourless mineral spirits (OMS), walnut or linseed oil, sealed jars and containers, mediums

  • Watercolours and gouache: select colours, substrates, brushes

- Small-medium sized surfaces (minimum dimensions: 8 inches; maximum dimensions: 24 inches) for weekly exercises: stretched, primed canvas, canvas paper, gessoed wood panel
