- Drawing: Portraiture
In this course you will explore various drawing techniques and materials to depict human faces and bodies. You will begin by considering the basic anatomy of the body, face, and head before experimenting and learning about contour lines, shading techniques, and basic colour theory. Subjects will be drawn from photographs and from life. Each project will be contextualized through examples of work by historical and contemporary artists. Materials used will include charcoal, black and white conté, water-soluble graphite, color pencils and chalk pastels. THURSDAYS, MAY 15 - JUN 19, 2PM - 5PM IN-PERSON
- Collage: Paper as Paint
The excitement of collage lies in its use of inexpensive and easily available materials and the immediacy of gluing paper to a surface. Whether you are new to collage or have some experience, you will enjoy the structured and imaginative exercises brought forward each session. This course will introduce you to different ways of using coloured and patterned papers to create a composition as you would do with paint. The focus will be on using both abstract and representational designs based on found and composed shapes. The use of coloured papers is a great way to expand your colour awareness and the development of colour schemes for paintings. Josef Albers, who wrote the Interaction of Colour, was an adamant believer in the “paper palette” to precede the paint palette. The projects will be small works of art in themselves but can also be used as ideas or studies for paintings. WEDNESDAYS, MAY 14 - JUN 18, 2PM - 5PM IN-PERSON
- Japanese Woodblock Printing (Mokuhanga)
Mokuhanga is a traditional woodblock printmaking method dating back to the Edo period of Japan. Some of Japan’s most iconic images were created through this technique, such as “The great wave off of Kanagawa” by Hokusai. Mokuhanga has grown in popularity in the contemporary printmaking world for its non-toxic quality and its accessibility of not using a printmakers press. It also develops skills that are transferable to other printmaking techniques. In this six-week course, you will be guided through carving multiple woodblocks for separate colours, applying water-based inks by brushwork to the woodblocks, and pressing them with paper by a baren (a baren is a traditional Japanese printmaking tool). You will complete at least two designs and two editions and become comfortable with the step-by-step process of Mokuhanga. You will also be introduced to bokashi and other additional Mokuhanga techniques. This is an excellent course for anyone interested in exploring the basics of printmaking without the need for a press or toxic inks and solvents. THURSDAYS, MAY 15 - JUN 19, 10AM - 1PM IN-PERSON
