- Drawing for the Absolute Beginner
Do you want to learn how to draw but don't know how to get started? Drawing for the Absolute Beginner is an ideal course for people with little or no experience in drawing. Students will be guided through the drawing process: from finding initial inspiration, to developing strong compositions on their paper, to executing fully developed illustrations. Foundational skills in mark-making, shading, perspective, and depth will be developed through in-class exercises/demonstrations and term assignments. Students will explore different illustrative approaches and experiment with both dry and wet drawing materials such as graphite, charcoal, and inks. Working from both imagination and observation, students will draw from a range of subjects including still-life arrangements, a live model, and photographs. Suitable for all levels. WEDNESDAYS, SEP 17 - DEC 10, 6PM - 9PM IN-PERSON
- Painting the Figure
This course focuses on the figure as illuminated by a survey of examples from the history of painting. As each new example presents ways to appreciate the possibilities of the figure as a subject matter, it likewise presents new technical challenges in areas such as scale, paint handling, layering and composition. Students combine direct work from a model with other sources including photographs, art historical sources and imagination. Suitable for all levels. WEDNESDAYS, SEP 17 - DEC 10, 10AM - 1PM ONLINE

The recommended paint for these exercises is gouache because most of the artists' works we will be looking at in class are done in oil and acrylic and gouache is the easiest medium to get similar effects. If you prefer to do in-class exercises in pastels, watercolour or acrylic, that is fine. You can use what you have. However, the instructor will be using gouache. - Suggested gouache paints: - Winsor Newton Designer Gouache: alizarin crimson, brilliant yellow, ultramarine blue, light purple, orange lake light, titanium white. - If you are on a tight budget you can purchase inexpensive sets of gouache on Amazon. - Watercolour brushes: #12 round and 3/4" flat brush (both synthetic sable) - Watercolour pad: 9 x 12", cold press, 140lb, cotton: I recommend the Arches Watercolour pad (this pad is expensive but the quality is amazing and you only need one pad for all the in-class exercises).
