  • Paint Like an Artist II

    In Paint Like an Artist II, you will be introduced to a 21st century painter each week. We will review their specific approaches to subject matter as well as application of paint and process. There will be a weekly painting project based on this discussion. This is a great course for those who are curious to learn how early mid 20th century artists have influenced many contemporary painters. The course will also provide an excellent opportunity to push your painting practice in new directions. Participants can use oil, acrylic, gouache or watercolour. This course can be taken as a follow-up to Paint Like an Artist I, but it is not necessary to have taken the first one to enrol in the second part.   • Pastel Flowers

    This workshop uses the pastel flower drawings of Odilon Redon as a source of inspiration. You will learn to make dream-like, ethereal flowers that merge into a coloured background. The focus is on using pastel techniques to draw flowers and to connect these flowers to a dynamic and interesting surrounding area. The emphasis will be learning to see shapes and colour as well as positive and negative space. Participants will enjoy learning some art history and applying these ideas to their work. The projects will include both representational and abstract approaches. You will be working from real flowers, artists reproductions, and collage compositions. The beauty and excitement of soft pastels is their immediacy of use and the purity of the colours as they are almost pure pigment. Suitable for all levels. See supply list.   • Pastels and Nature

    This course uses soft pastels with nature as a source of inspiration. Pastel drawings will include plants, flowers, landscapes, and other natural forms such as shells and rocks. You will be encouraged to work in an imaginative and inventive way that pushes the subject beyond mere representation. Chalk pastel techniques and information about design and colour will be covered.   • Painting the Everyday with Gouache

    Gouache is an opaque water-based paint that is easy-to-use and a great medium for beginners. Students will discover the excitement of working with gouache through a range of weekly projects. This course is inspired by the artist, illustrator, and writer Maira Kalman. The focus is on using objects and experiences that are part of your everyday life, as well as using popular culture and current events as subject matter. Composition, working with text, and ideas surrounding meaning and content will be addressed with each project. Course will include presentations of other artists working with ‘the everyday’ as a source as well as examples of artists who work with gouache. Suitable for all levels.   • Painting: The Basics

    Are you curious about how to paint, but don’t know where to begin? This course is a great introduction to the basics of painting, including brush types, brush handling, mixing, and applying paint to the surface. Other aspects of painting such as creating a dynamic composition and an introduction to colour theory will also be covered. You will paint from still-life set-ups, photographic references, outdoors (plein air), and from your imagination.   • Drawing: Material and Concept

    This course offers an in-depth exploration of the ideas and approaches that define contemporary drawing practices. Moving beyond traditional representation, students will focus on drawing as a means of personal expression and communication. Techniques such as ink drawing, collage, and photo-transfer will be introduced, encouraging exploration of diverse materials and surfaces.   • Painting: Series Development

    This course focuses on developing a series of work around a theme. The initial theme of this class is the idea of neighbourhood. As a prerequisite to this course, students must take 12 photographs (minimum), of what they think of as their neighbourhood (interpreted however broadly you want), and bring these with them to the first class. For the preliminary project students paint a triptych from this selection of images, in the style most suited to the individual. We will discuss the elements of painting language and help refine your visual priorities. From this initial project, students develop a body of work based on a theme of their choice. Examples of contemporary artists working in a thematic way will be given throughout the course. Students can work in a painting media of their choice: acrylic, watercolour, gouache or oil.   • Drawing: Exploration of Materials

    This is a great course for students wanting to learn about, and experiment with a variety of drawing mediums. Using materials such as graphite, charcoal, ink and pastels, students will explore the capabilities of both traditional and unconventional drawing materials. Each class will focus on a different drawing medium and the methods of using that material. In-class projects will include still-life, the figure, nature, working from photographs as well as abstraction. The work of contemporary artists who use drawing in their practice will be introduced and analyzed throughout the course. Students will be encouraged to reconsider the possibilities of what drawing is, while developing a personal sensibility of how to use drawing in their art practice. Suitable for all levels.   • Painting from Photography

    Photography has impacted the practice of painting throughout modern art history, and it continues to inspire contemporary artists today. This course will examine how painters use cameras and photographs as tools that influence their artistic visions. Students will examine how artists such as Damian Loeb achieve photorealism, while others such as Justin Duffus use existing imagery as a source of inspiration for their abstracted paintings. The close relationship between painting and photography will be examined by studying precedent artworks, discussing artistic theories, and developing technical painting skills though in-class exercises and assignments.   • Painting the Ocean

    This course will help to develop an understanding of how to paint the ocean. Source material will include working from life, photographs, and memory. Some elements of colour theory (mixing, schemes, how to achieve depth) and sketching fundamentals will be covered to help develop strong painting compositions. Prepare to practice capturing water s changing forms, textures, and movement by learning how to use a variety of painting techniques. Some contemporary and historical paintings of oceans will be looked at to help inform our own paintings. One class will be held on location at Dallas Road Beach to practice capturing a real-life ocean scene. Acrylic and/or oil painters welcome. Suitable for all levels.   • Drawing: Portraiture

    In this course you will explore various drawing techniques and materials to depict human faces and bodies. You will begin by considering the basic anatomy of the face and head before experimenting and learning about contour lines, faceted shapes, shading techniques, and basic colour theory. Subjects will be drawn from photographs and from life. Each project will be contextualized through examples of work by historical and contemporary artists.   • Painting: Introduction to Colour

    In this beginner level course, you will be introduced to the building blocks of colour: value, hue, saturation, and explore how to use them. You will learn how to mix and match colours as well as how our perception of colour is affected by surrounding colours. You will discover how light affects colour and how to use translucent and opaque applications of paint to achieve different results.
