You don’t need to buy expensive brushes. I like having a hog bristle brush on hand because it can withstand scrubbing. You should try different types of brushes but please include at least the following: - 1 flat or filbert #10 or #12 (approx. 1-1½” wide) - 1 flat or filbert #3 or #4 - 1 round #1 or #2 You will also need: - 1 Palette knife (I recommend teardrop shaped) - 1 roll of masking tape - 1 roll of paper towels (blue shop towels are excellent) You will also need a black dry-erase marker and 2-3 plastic sheet/document protectors (I’ll clarify their purpose in class) If you are using oil paint: - Palette for oils -I recommend disposable palette sheets Medium for oils – - 1 small bottle of linseed oil - 1 bottle of odourless mineral spirits (Taltine, Gamsol) or non-toxic citrus thinner You should also have - - 1-2 small empty glass jar with lid for your thinner - 1 small container for medium. (Clean tuna can is fine) Paper for oils - We will start by working on paper for quick exercises. You’ll need at least a dozen sheets so a pad is a good and economical choice. Get the larger one you can always cut it. You must either have canvas paper, paper for oils or paper that you have gessoed ahead of time. You may also want to work on canvas or board for some projects. We’ll talk about size and surface in class. If you are using acrylic paint: - Palette for acrylics – If you use acrylics regularly, I recommend you try a stay-wet palette (buy the largest) OR disposable sheets - Liquid medium for acrylics (your choice of gloss or mat) - 2 containers for water (plastic yogurt containers are great) Paper for acrylics – We will start by working on paper for quick exercises. Discover Thomas Guerrero's background and education. Biography Thomas is the writer behind the blog Sidewalking Victoria which he has been writing since 2015. The blog showcases Thomas' photography both with digital and film cameras. Thomas has been making pictures since he was seven when his dad gave him an old Canonet QL19. At the time he was only allowed to shoot black and white film until he could show that he had mastered the use of the shutter speed and aperture. Like most of the world, Thomas moved on to digital photography until 2020 when he rediscovered that same QL19 and nursed it back to health and began shooting film again. While Thomas’ subject matter is broad, you will see a focus on moments overlaid on both structures and textures. Discover Meghan Krauss's background and education. Biography Meghan is a practicing photographic artist who lives and works, amidst domestic chaos, in Victoria, BC. She moved to the island in 2015 after finishing a three-year photography practicum internship at The Banff Centre, Banff, AB. Meghan obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Windsor, Windsor, ON (2012) and she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, SK (2005). Meghan has exhibited her work across Canada and the US, attended a self-directed Residency in Northern Iceland (2014) and the Toni Onley Artists' Project, Virtual Edition, through Island Mountain Arts, Wells, BC (2021). She received a Social Science and Humanities Research Council Scholarship, Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and a full tuition Scholarship while acquiring her masters degree. She has also been the recipient of a Saskatchewan Arts Board Independent Artists Project Grant, an Alberta Foundation for the Arts Visual Arts and New Media Individual Project Grant and a British Columbia Arts Council Professional Development Assistance Grant. Her current series, The Artist, is in response to the place she found herself in during the pandemic. Taking notice, via social media, of creative friends', peers and mentors' productive spaces, she began reaching out with the intent of connecting virtually for a photoshoot, regardless of how elaborate or makeshift each individual's spaces were. An intimacy is achieved in the images, as the viewer is allowed into these personal and private spaces during these strange times. Discover Kelly Zantingh's background and education. Biography Kelly Zantingh (she/her) is a visual artist and photographer based on lekwungen territory (Victoria, bc). She graduated with a BAH in studio art from the University of Guelph in 2016 and has participated in artist residencies in Nova Scotia, the Yukon, Portugal, and Victoria. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada in group and two-person shows in Toronto, Montreal, and Dawson City. She had her first solo exhibition exploring sculptural photography in 2023 at the Fifty Fifty Arts Collective in Victoria entitled lifelines, water bodies. Her works centre around intimacy, touch, bodies and their interactions with land and environments in the age of the Anthropocene.
