Recommended (but not required) colours: Quinacridone Red or Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Lemon or Hansa Yellow, Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Medium, Phthalo Blue (green shade), Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ivory Black. You will need a palette, brushes, rags, and whatever you need to clean your brushes. Surfaces: We will generally need one medium-sized surface (12” x 16” or larger) to paint on each week. Stretched primed canvas, large canvas paper, or gessoed wood panels are acceptable for acrylic and oil, or any watercolour paper for watercolour and gouache. Discover Lindsay Shojania's background and education. Born in Vancouver and raised in Victoria, Lindsay studied political science at McGill before returning home to her family. She was a board member of the Children’s Museum, member of Canadian Institute for International Affairs (CIIA) and is currently a board member of the Greater Victoria Housing Society (GVHS). Lindsay has volunteered at the Greater Victoria Art Gallery, Arts in Bloom and CNIB Eye Appeal. She is a collector of art, and loves exposing herself to new artists. ($25.99 at Munro’s Books or available at the public library) - Small embroidery scissors - Fabric scissors - Variety of embroidery cotton and pearl cotton in colours you are drawn to (can start with a couple and add on as class progresses) - Embroidery Needles (get at least one smaller and one larger sized one) - Embroidery hoop (8” or 10”) - 12 pieces of plain cotton fabric, 12” x 12” each. New or repurposed. Light or dark coloured - choose one colour you are drawn to, or begin with a couple squares and get more as the class progresses. You will be stitching on one per week of class. Discover Andy Lou's background and education. Biography Andy Shutse Lou is a classically trained, award-winning artist based in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Born in China and educated in the United States, he holds an MFA from the University of North Texas and has taught contemporary Chinese brush painting across Canada, the U.S., and China. Blending Eastern tradition with Western innovation, Andy uses Chinese brushes, rice paper, and ink alongside watercolor, gouache, and acrylic to create vivid interpretations of North American landscapes. His work is known for dynamic color contrasts and a harmonious fusion of classical subtlety and modern expression. Internationally exhibited and collected, Andy’s art was featured in the 2024 exhibition Crossing at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Discover Wendy Welch's background and education. Biography Wendy Welch is a Victoria-based artist with a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal. Wendy also completed a year of graduate work at California State University, Los Angeles. Wendy's art practice includes drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, art writing and curatorial work. Wendy has had solo exhibitions at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, the Richmond Art Gallery and Open Space, and has been included in group shows in Montreal, Calgary, Portland and Los Angeles. Her work was recently part of a group exhibition at the Victoria Arts Council called “Don’t Look Now” curated by Kegan McFadden. Wendy wrote weekly art columns for a local publication (Monday Magazine) from 2000-2007, and has had writing published in Canadian Art Magazine and Border Crossings. She has also written essays for several artist catalogues. Wendy has curated exhibitions at the Fran Willis Gallery, Open Space and currently curates for the artist-run Slide Room Gallery located in Vancouver Island School of Art. Wendy has taught at the Victoria College of Art, the University of Victoria and Camosun College. Discover Tamara Bond's background and education. Biography Tamara Bond was born in Prince George BC and received her BFA from Emily Carr University in 1999. Her work has been shown in commercial and public galleries and Artist run-centres across Canada. Bond is represented by Madrona Gallery in Victoria, BC. She is a recent recipient of an Explore and Create Canada Council Grant (2021) to create a graphic memoir and another (2022) to create a series of large scale, mixed media paintings. Bond’s studio practice involves storytelling with many mediums including collage, painting, mixed media and drawing. She attempts to draw everything that her mind considers, and combines them all to create narratives from. Lukas is a reasonable brand with nice vivid colours suitable to this course's approaches - A range of warm and cool primary colours. Reds: Alizarin Crimson (cool), Cadmium red hue (Warm) Yellows: Cadmium light hue (W), Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow (C) Blues: Cerulean (C) & Ultramarine (W) Raw Sienna and Payne's Grey Acrylic medium -Any brand, used for base coats Brushes - Use a variety of rounds and flat synthetic sable brushes for watercolour/gouache - Have a large (#10 or #12 ) flat watercolour /gouache brush, #8 rigger, and Princeton 'Dagger" brush - Flat 1” acrylic brush to apply acrylic medium - Feel free to use what you already have Pens - Black water-soluble felt-tipped pen - Sharpie (fat) - Fudenosuke pen - Black broad posca marker Surfaces/Paper - Look for an 11"x14" or 16"x20" multi-media pad that takes watercolour and ink - Plan to repurpose old sketchbooks Palette - Plastic palette for mixing paint, (white plastic lids, white plates or disposable palette pad can also be used) Other Supplies - Drawing board (18x24”) - 2 Bulldog clips (to hold the paper to the board - optional). - Plastic containers to hold water (such as yogurt containers) - Painters masking tape (removable) - Rags (old cotton clothes) for cleaning up - Small spray bottle (Optional) Inks - Black ink specifically for fountain pens such as Parker Quink.
