Painting: New Takes on Old Masters

Use art history as innovative source of inspiration for painting.

More details

This workshop explores ways that contemporary painters use historical work to learn from, and as a way to comment on the present. Students will produce studies based on details from Baroque and Romantic painting, updating and transforming them in ways that address contemporary perspectives. You will explore fundamentals of compositional balance and rhythm and monochromatic painting, while also considering ways that revisiting the past can serve as a way to create personal or political allegory; students are invited to develop paintings on top of their own past work as a way of producing a richly historied surface. Studio work will be supported by slide shows of artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Anselm Kiefer, Pat Steir, and Sigmar Polke. Oil or acrylic painters welcome. Some painting experience recommended. SATURDAY & SUNDAY, JUN 22 & 23, 10AM - 4:30PM IN-PERSON
