He is an accomplished artist with thirty years of teaching experience to college students and adult learners. Lukas is a reasonable brand with nice vivid colours suitable to this course's approaches - A range of warm and cool primary colours. Reds: Alizarin Crimson (cool), Cadmium red hue (Warm) Yellows: Cadmium light hue (W), Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow (C) Blues: Cerulean (C) & Ultramarine (W) Raw Sienna and Payne's Grey - Watercolour: Similar idea and a similar colour range Acrylic medium -Any brand, used for base coats Inks - Black ink specifically for fountain pens such as Parker Quink. Higgins also has a reasonable one - Three colours of Acrylic Ink (not for Fountain pens-it will clog them!) - F&W Liquitex and Golden all make good ones. Red. Cerulean and Ultramarine Blue or similar (so many hues will work) *with paints and inks, I prefer to shop to taste as you would buying shirts or pastries rather than focusing on theory. While the instructor has experience and knowledge of all these media, the student is expected to have some knowledge of the medium they choose to work in for this course. If you are looking for a how-to-paint course, please consider our Painting: Introduction I course. For every class to do in-class exercises: - 9 x 12” or larger sketchbook (preferably the kind with rings so pages can lie flat) or loose sheets of paper - 9 x 12” watercolour sketchbook (Arches, 100% cotton) - HB pencil, eraser and sharpener- set of watercolours, watercolour brush #10 (approx) - palette to mix paint on - coloured pencils - glue stick - scissors - jar of water Materials will be discussed during the first class but here is a general overview of what you should expect to have on hand: -paints: a good selection of colours, at least two of each of the primary and secondary colours (a warm and cool of each), two browns, black and white -brushes: a range of brushes from small to large, round and flat -medium: (for acrylic or oil)-odourless mineral spirits (for oil) -palette to mix paint on-palette knives (metal for oil, plastic for water based medium) -rags -surfaces: canvas, cradled panels, paper, found wood -drawing materials: pencil, charcoal, etc. Recommended Textbook: Moszynska, Anna, Abstract Art , Thames & Hudson, 2020 Edition.
