Recommended (but not required) colours: Quinacridone Red or Permanent Rose, Ultramarine Blue, Lemon or Hansa Yellow, Titanium White, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Medium, Phthalo Blue (green shade), Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ivory Black. You will need a palette, brushes, rags, and whatever you need to clean your brushes. Surfaces: We will generally need one medium-sized surface (12” x 16” or larger) to paint on each week. Stretched primed canvas, large canvas paper, or gessoed wood panels are acceptable for acrylic and oil, or any watercolour paper for watercolour and gouache.     Discover Desiree DeRuiter's background and education. Biography Desiree deRuiter is a visual artist working in Victoria BC with multiple printmaking techniques as well as sculpture and bookbinding methods. Her work explores psychological forms that are both natural and bizarre. These works resist being known objects and often attempt to retain obscurity, beauty and fragility. Desiree completed a BA in visual arts in 2011. She received second prize from the Victoria Emerging Artist Awards in 2013 and she currently has works with the Vancouver Art Gallery Rentals and Sales and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair in London, UK. She has shown in solo and group shows locally and internationally, and she has attended residencies at Creative Spark in Dundalk, Ireland and Karuizawa Mokuhanga School in Japan. Paper • pads or individual sheets. Look for smooth or cold press surface (i.e. Strathmore 400 series Heavy Weight Printmaking paper 8 x 10" or Strathmore Mixed Media 300 g). Check Michael's as they often have deals on pads of paper. Tools: • two or more palette knives either plastic or metal • pad of disposable palette sheets (i.e. Strathmore 300 Palette Paper 9 x 12") or roll of parchment paper • roll of paper towel Brushes: • If you have any watercolour brushes please bring them to class • If you need to buy brushes, start with a couple of watercolour brushes that are round, small to medium size l(i.e. #6 ). Opus brands like Allegro or Galiano Watercolour Brushes would be a good start • A great brush for gouache is the Princeton Chubby kid brush either flat or round at Opus.     Discover Natasha Van Netten's background and education. Biography Natasha van Netten’s art practice is influenced by zoology, oceanography and cetology (the study of whales). As a multidisciplinary artist, she explores science-based concepts and ideas in a variety of ways, including installation, drawing, painting and sculpture. A personal curiosity towards the natural world is central to her work. Natasha received a Diploma of Fine Art from the Vancouver Island School of Art in 2016. She was honoured to be a recipient of the Robin Hopper Legacy Award from the Victoria Visual Arts Legacy Society, an Award of Excellence at the Sooke Fine Art Show and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 Wildlife Artist of the Year Award by Sketch for Survival (London, UK).
