For in-class painting exercises gouache paint is preferred because most of the artwork we will be looking at is done in acrylic or oil and gouache will yield the closest results to those mediums. In-class demos will use gouache. If you prefer not to buy gouache paint for homework exercises you can use watercolour or acrylics. Also I recommend high-quality watercolour paper for in-class exercises if you want good results. You don’t need to buy expensive brushes. I like having a hog bristle brush on hand because it can withstand scrubbing. You should try different types of brushes but please include at least the following: - 1 flat or filbert #10 or #12 (approx. 1-1½” wide) - 1 flat or filbert #3 or #4 - 1 round #1 or #2 You will also need: - 1 Palette knife (I recommend teardrop shaped) - 1 roll of masking tape - 1 roll of paper towels (blue shop towels are excellent) - 1 board or surface that you can tape your paper to for painting. - A black dry-erase marker - 2-3 clear plastic sheet/document protectors If you are using oil paint: - Palette for oils -I recommend disposable palette sheets - Medium for oils – 1 small bottle of linseed oil 1 bottle of odourless mineral spirits (Taltine, Gamsol) or non-toxic citrus thinner - 1-2 small empty glass jar with lid for your thinner - 1 small container for medium. (Clean tuna can is fine) - Paper for oils: We will start by working on paper for quick exercises. You’ll need at least a dozen sheets so a pad is a good and economical choice. Get the larger one you can always cut it. You must either have canvas paper, paper for oils or paper that you have gessoed ahead of time. Sometimes we will be working on a coloured ground, so you may want to have a the 3 primary colours in a cheap acrylic. You may also want to work on canvas or board for some projects. We’ll talk about size and surface in class. If you are using acrylic paint: - Palette for acrylics – If you use acrylics regularly, I recommend you try a stay-wet palette (buy the largest) OR disposable palette sheets - Liquid medium for acrylics (your choice of gloss or mat) - 2 containers for water (plastic yogurt containers are great) - Paper for acrylics: We will start by working on paper for quick exercises. Gary has received numerous grants and awards, including the Vancouver Institute of Visual Arts VIVA award in 1991, and the Okanagan Arts Award in Visual Arts, in 2010. Discover Tamara Bond's background and education. Biography Tamara Bond was born in Prince George BC and received her BFA from Emily Carr University in 1999. Her work has been shown in commercial and public galleries and Artist run-centres across Canada. Bond is represented by Madrona Gallery in Victoria, BC. She is a recent recipient of an Explore and Create Canada Council Grant (2021) to create a graphic memoir and another (2022) to create a series of large scale, mixed media paintings. Bond’s studio practice involves storytelling with many mediums including collage, painting, mixed media and drawing. The Vancouver Island School of Art is a teaching community that has served Victoria and the surrounding area for the last 20 years. VISA is an independent post-secondary school with a focus on technique, personal expression and contemporary context. The school was founded in 2004 by artist and educator Wendy Welch. From its inception, VISA has always sought out artists in the community who have a unique vision based on their own artistic practice.
