Discover Corrie Peters 's background and education. Biography Corrie Peters (she/her) is an artist in conversation with social practice, fibre art and installation, among other mediums. Her artwork is building relationships that teach her how to listen to and learn from those often silenced through current systems of power. In this she holds so much gratitude for all those who have, and continue to, teach her about empathy, activism, change and care. The publicly displayed pieces are the documentation of Corrie’s artwork – translating what she has learnt to a larger audience. These are often layered projects that involve time, both as a medium, and as a component of viewing. She continually finds herself returning to the craft-based materials and techniques of the matriarchs of her family in all her work. Corrie is living as an uninvited guest with her extended family, on the unceded land of the lək̓ʷəŋən speaking peoples. Her work has been supported by grants from The Canada Council for the Arts, Social Science and Humanities Research, among others, as well as through residencies at the Santa Fe Art Institute and Salt Spring Arts Council. Discover Jessica Ziakin's background and education. Biography Jessica grew up in the Pacific Northwest and has an MA Art History and Visual Studies and a BA in History in Art and Psychology from the University of Victoria. She also did the diploma program at VISA from 2010 to 2015. Currently a Fellow at the Center for Studies in Religion and Society, her research focuses on visual theology and the sacred in modern art and art history. Jessica's art practice is based on religious texts and medieval Illuminations, and explores the limits of faithfulness and the construction of sacred space. She has 20 years of experience teaching art, art history, creative development and theology across many communities, both secular and sacred, in Victoria. The recommended paint for these exercises is gouache because most of the artists' works we will be looking at in class are done in oil and acrylic and gouache is the easiest medium to get similar effects. If you prefer to do in-class exercises in pastels, watercolour or acrylic, that is fine. You can use what you have. However, the instructor will be using gouache. - Suggested gouache paints: - Winsor Newton Designer Gouache: alizarin crimson, brilliant yellow, ultramarine blue, light purple, orange lake light, titanium white. - If you are on a tight budget you can purchase inexpensive sets of gouache on Amazon. - Watercolour brushes: #12 round and 3/4" flat brush (both synthetic sable) - Watercolour pad: 9 x 12", cold press, 140lb, cotton: I recommend the Arches Watercolour pad (this pad is expensive but the quality is amazing and you only need one pad for all the in-class exercises).
