You don’t need to buy expensive brushes. I like having a hog bristle brush on hand because it can withstand scrubbing. You should try different types of brushes but please include at least the following: - 1 flat or filbert #10 or #12 (approx. 1-1½” wide) - 1 flat or filbert #3 or #4 - 1 round #1 or #2 You will also need: - 1 Palette knife (I recommend teardrop shaped) - 1 roll of masking tape - 1 roll of paper towels (blue shop towels are excellent) You will also need a black dry-erase marker and 2-3 plastic sheet/document protectors (I’ll clarify their purpose in class) If you are using oil paint: - Palette for oils -I recommend disposable palette sheets Medium for oils – - 1 small bottle of linseed oil - 1 bottle of odourless mineral spirits (Taltine, Gamsol) or non-toxic citrus thinner You should also have - - 1-2 small empty glass jar with lid for your thinner - 1 small container for medium. (Clean tuna can is fine) Paper for oils - We will start by working on paper for quick exercises. You’ll need at least a dozen sheets so a pad is a good and economical choice. Discover Andy Lou's background and education. Biography Andy Shutse Lou is a classically trained, award-winning artist based in Victoria, B.C., Canada. Born in China and educated in the United States, he holds an MFA from the University of North Texas and has taught contemporary Chinese brush painting across Canada, the U.S., and China. Blending Eastern tradition with Western innovation, Andy uses Chinese brushes, rice paper, and ink alongside watercolor, gouache, and acrylic to create vivid interpretations of North American landscapes. His work is known for dynamic color contrasts and a harmonious fusion of classical subtlety and modern expression. Discover Lucia Volker's background and education. Biography Lucia Volker is an artist and designer who explores abstraction using various techniques in painting, printmaking and site-specific mixed media installations. Inspired by formal elements of design, mark making and non-fine art types of painting, Lucia has developed a vast body of work shown in galleries across Canada and the United States, including Red Head Gallery in Toronto and ZINC Contemporary in Seattle. Select residencies include Assets for Artists at MASS MoCA, The Ou Gallery and Leña Artist Research and Residency Centre. Discover Tamara Bond's background and education. Biography Tamara Bond was born in Prince George BC and received her BFA from Emily Carr University in 1999. Her work has been shown in commercial and public galleries and Artist run-centres across Canada. Bond is represented by Madrona Gallery in Victoria, BC. She is a recent recipient of an Explore and Create Canada Council Grant (2021) to create a graphic memoir and another (2022) to create a series of large scale, mixed media paintings. Bond’s studio practice involves storytelling with many mediums including collage, painting, mixed media and drawing. She attempts to draw everything that her mind considers, and combines them all to create narratives from.
