Lukas is a reasonable brand with nice vivid colours suitable to this course's approaches - A range of warm and cool primary colours. Reds: Alizarin Crimson (cool), Cadmium red hue (Warm) Yellows: Cadmium light hue (W), Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow (C) Blues: Cerulean (C) & Ultramarine (W) Raw Sienna and Payne's Grey - Watercolour: Similar idea and a similar colour range Acrylic medium -Any brand, used for base coats Inks - Black ink specifically for fountain pens such as Parker Quink. Higgins also has a reasonable one - Three colours of Acrylic Ink (not for Fountain pens-it will clog them!) - F&W Liquitex and Golden all make good ones. Red. Cerulean and Ultramarine Blue or similar (so many hues will work) *with paints and inks, I prefer to shop to taste as you would buying shirts or pastries rather than focusing on theory. For in-class painting exercises gouache paint is preferred because most of the artwork we will be looking at is done in acrylic or oil and gouache will yield the closest results to those mediums. In-class demos will use gouache. If you prefer not to buy gouache paint for homework exercises you can use watercolour or acrylics. Also I recommend high-quality watercolour paper for in-class exercises if you want good results. In-class exercises: - Gouache paint: Recommended brand Winsor and Newton Suggested colours: Winsor Red, Primary Yellow, Winsor Blue, Winsor Green, Winsor Violet, Orange Lake Light (you can use other brands and colours but basically get: red, blue, yellow, green, orange and violet as all coloured can be mixed from these) - H pencil, eraser and sharpener - #10 and #4 round brushes, 3/4" flat brush - Arches Watercolour Pad, 9 x 12”, cold press, 100% cotton (or other good quality watercolour paper) Homework projects, suggested materials: - paints (oil, acrylics, watercolour or gouache) in a range of colours -including warm and cool yellow, warm and cool red, warm and cool blue, at least 2 greens, one orange, one violet and large tube of white (for oil or acrylic) - matte medium (acrylic), odourless mineral spirits and walnut or linseed oil for oils - variety of brushes - surfaces to paint on (canvas, panel or paper, depending on paint choice) -you will need at least five surfaces for the course. However many students prefer to do the course in watercolour or gouache especially if this is their primary medium.
