    Discover Val Lawton's background and education. Biography Val Lawton is a Victoria-based artist and illustrator. She has illustrated more than 30 picture books, including series for both the CFL and the NHL, all rendered in pen, ink and watercolour. She has taught nature sketching at a range of elementary and high schools and for the Robert Bateman Gallery of Nature program at the Bateman Centre in Victoria.Val is currently Vice-President of the Victoria Sketch Club and an active member of the Island Chapter, Canadian Society of Childrens’ Authors, Illustrators and Performers. Val’s work also includes close-at-hand landscapes and with a focus on local flora and fauna, using graphite, coloured pencil, watercolour and ink. However many students prefer to do the course in watercolour or gouache especially if this is their primary medium.
